The Receptive State

by Joshua Smith, 2006

'The Receptive State' is a concept album that is both an aural and visual experience. Combining both a CD-ROM and traditional music CD in style, narrative, mood and content, the project aims to bridge the gap between the audio and visual aspects of an album by showcasing the artist's interpretation of both.

The underlying concept of both the music and the CD-ROM is centered around the notions of how your actions affect your surrounds, and the choices we face because of this power. It also highlights the reciprocal nature of your choices, and how the surroundings also affect you. This is highlighted by the relationship of the music and the visuals, the music evolving with the city and yet the city being inspired by the music.

The Visual Counterpart (The CD-ROM)
The CD-ROM is an interactive environment based in an abandoned city, in which the user can explore. The user is given choices whether to do good or bad, and these choices affect whether the city starts to destroy itself or be rejuvenated. However, the user must choose an entirely good or evil path, or the city will return to normality.
